Minority Health

The Cook County Department of Public Health is committed to developing, maintaining and enhancing health care services to minority communities. To achieve these goals, CCDPH works with state and local partners to heighten awareness of minority health issues and concerns such as disease prevention and lack of access to services.

In suburban Cook County the population is diverse, with 6 percent Asian; 14 percent black, non-Hispanic; 14 percent Hispanic; and 65 percent white, non-Hispanic. (See WePlan appendices for more information.)

Health Disparities

One of the goals of Healthy People 2010 is to eliminate health disparities in regards to gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, geographic location, or sexual orientation. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health has identified six areas in which racial and ethnic minorities experience inequality in health care access and outcomes. They are:

  • Cancer Screening and Management
  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
  • Diabetes
  • HIV Infection/AIDS
  • Immunizations
  • Infant Mortality
