Public Health Nuisances

The purpose of the nuisance abatement program is to promote public health by eliminating the disease producing hazards specified by State of Illinois Statute. The nuisances named by this statute are: the improper storage of garbage; malfunctioning private sewage disposal systems; the accumulation of containers that hold water that may harbor mosquitoes; failure to properly seal an abandoned water well; and, improperly maintaining a swimming pool or a wading pool so that it contains visible mosquito larvae.

County agencies are only permitted to enforce this state statute outside the corporate limits of any city, village or incorporated town. If the nuisance occurs within municipal boundaries, residents must contact their local municipality to file a complaint.

Written complaints may be mailed to:

Cook County Department of Public Health Environmental Health Services 1010 Lake Street, Suite 300 Oak Park, IL 60301-1133

Complaints by phone may be made by either calling the nearest district office, or by calling our main office at 708-492-2035. Complaints received that are out of the jurisdiction of the Cook County Department of Public Health will be forwarded to the local municipality.
