The Genetic Newborn Screening Program is a program which the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Genetics/Newborn Screening Program is responsible for testing infants for metabolic, endocrine and sickling disorders. Cook county Department of Public Health coordinates follow-up services for children identified through newborn screening and referrals made by birthing hospitals, IDPH Genetic/Newborn Screening Program Staff, primary physicians, and specialists to assure that newborn screening follow-up and genetic services are available for children, families and the general population, regardless of age.
The Cook County Department is responsible for ensuring that all referred infants receive follow-up information that maybe necessary, families are provided information for assistance needed to make informed decisions about newborn screening follow-up services, including diagnosis and treatment of suspected disorders, and information about educational resources and about genetic counseling and support services available in their community when a child is identified with a newborn screening disorder.
