| As the official public health agency of Cook County government, the Cook County Department of Public Health has a long history of meeting the health needs of its citizens through disease prevention and health promotion programs.
Unlike a health care system which provides direct medical care to its citizens, the public health system focuses on the population as a whole. At the local level, public health works toward promoting a healthy community through education, outreach, surveillance and disease prevention services.
Established in 1945 with 90 employees, to more than 500 today, CCDPH provides services for 125 municipalities at clinics and offices throughout the region. Services include maternal and child health; STD and HIV testing and counseling; childhood immunizations; restaurant and environmental inspections; violence prevention services; tobacco prevention; lead inspection, abatement and mitigation; community preparedness; health promotion and education to name just a few.
Partnerships are at the heart of our work. By teaming with schools, community-based and faith-based organizations, private medical providers, hospitals, businesses and elected officials we can collaboratively improve the health outcome of our residents.
I welcome you to the Cook County Department of Public Health! Please feel free to email me if you have any concerns.
Sincerely,

Stephen A. Martin, Jr., Ph.D., M.P.H.
